Memories in Music

Imagine it: You’re listening to the radio or your playlist and suddenly Elton John comes on. You are no longer just listening, you’re transported somewhere else entirely. You think of the earliest memory first. It’s American Idol night and your mom is woo-hooing at the tv because he just took the stage as a guest performer and took everyone by surprise. Next you think of that marching band season where you spent countless hours marching in the grass while waving a flag to your classmates playing “Your Song” and “Saturday”. And you laugh because the title apparently isn’t “Saturday” but the way we sang it, that was the only word in the whole song. So how could it not be the title?

One of my favorite aspects of music is the memories that we can associate with songs. A familiar melody comes on and you’re instantly in another time and place. And you get to feel all those feelings tied to that memory again.

So we’re adding “memories” to the list of why music education is important. Because without the musicians, there’s no music. And without the music, there go the memories.
